In addition to SHSU's hosting of the SCI Region VI conference, the university will also be sponsoring a Percussion Ensemble Composition Competition. For details, click here.

The Society of Composers, Inc., Region VI Conference will be held April 16-19, 2008, at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX (one hour north of Houston). This year’s conference will also serve as Sam Houston State University’s 46th Contemporary Music Festival and will feature guest composer David Dzubay.

Scores will be accepted from all SCI composers, with preference for scores by composers affiliated with Region VI. All composers selected for performance during the conference must attend the conference and have their membership in good standing.

Submissions from student composers are encouraged. Submissions from composers who can supply their own performers are strongly encouraged. Electronic/Electroacoustic and multimedia works are also strongly encouraged. Video playback is available also (see below for list of available formats). We also welcome works in which the composer/performer provides his own portable equipment (ADAT, ProTools, Logic, Mac/PC, etc.) that we may not have available.

Submitted works may be up to 20 minutes in duration, with preference given to works under 15 minutes. All performances will be recorded. Composers will receive a recording of their works during or after the conference.

Call for Submissions - Scores and Recordings: Composers are invited to submit scores for the following: Performers (solo with or without accompaniment, or in chamber ensembles of up to 6 performers):

Possible ensemble forces include:

Chamber pieces requiring a conductor may be submitted, but rehearsal time will be a factor in the selection process.

Composers able to provide their own performers or that can submit works of varied instrumentations will be more likely to have works accepted to the conference.

Please submit up to three compositions for consideration. For each work, submit a score, separate CD or cassette recording, program notes, and a contact sheet with the composer’s name, address, telephone numbers, email addresses, a list of works submitted with durations, and a brief bio. Electronic music will be broadcast up to a 4.1 diffused surround playback system [from a 2-channel (stereo) source]. For the selection process, please submit a DVD or CD. For multimedia works, please submit DVD or VHS formats for consideration. If you wish your materials returned to you, please include an SASE.

Selections will be made by the ensemble directors and performers, in coordination with the conference hosts. Playability and available rehearsal time will be a factor in all selection decisions. Composers will be notified by January 15, 2008.

Selected composers must provide all required performance materials. Sam Houston State University, Rice University, and/or SCI will not pay rental costs or other fees relating to performance materials.

Call for Submissions - Papers and/or Panel Discussions

Abstracts or proposals for paper presentations or panel discussions on topics related to new music are also encouraged. The submission deadline (postmark) for paper/panel proposals is December 1, 2007. We prefer to receive these proposals via email in PDF, MS Word, or RTF format. Presenters will be notified by January 15, 2008.
