2007 SCI Region 6 Conference - Central Missouri State University
February 8-10, 2007
The Society of Composers, Inc., Region VI Conference will be held February 8-10, 2007, at Central Missouri State University. Scores will be accepted from all SCI composers, with preference for scores by composers affiliated with Region VI. All composers selected for performance during the conference must attend the conference and have their membership in good standing.
Submissions from student composers are encouraged. Submissions from composers who can supply their own performers are strongly encouraged. Electronic/Electroacoustic and multimedia works are also strongly encouraged (maximum 8.1 format + optional video; see below for list of available technology).
Submission Deadline for Music Scores: September 15, 2006 (postmark)
Submission Deadline for Paper Presentations: October 1, 2006 (postmark)
Notification of Accepted Works: November 1, 2006
Judging Process: Selections will be made by the ensemble directors and performers, in coordination with the conference host. Difficulty and available rehearsal time will be a factor in all selection decisions.
Performers (solo with or without accompaniment, or in chamber ensembles of up to 6 performers):
- Clarinet (Bb, A, or Bass)
- Saxophone (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone)
- Piano (no prepared piano)
- Soprano Voice
- Tenor Voice
- Bass (and electric bass)
Possible ensemble forces include:
- CMSU Faculty Brass Quintet
- CMSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble (standard large wind ensemble)
- CMSU Symphony Orchestra (2222/4321/4 Perc/66442)
- CMSU University Choir (SSAATTBB; ca. 40 members)
- CMSU Chamber Singers (SATB; ca. 16 members)
- CMSU Jazz Band 1 (standard jazz big band)
We are also pleased to welcome submissions for performance by Musica Nova (Zhou Long, director), the resident new music ensemble of the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. They will present one concert of music by SCI composers and Martin Bresnick, renowned American composer and recipient of the first Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Musica Nova's instrumentation: violin (2 performers), viola, cello, flute (2 performers doubling picc, 1 doubling alto), clarinet (1 performer, Bb, A, and Bass available), saxophone (1 performer, alto and tenor available), piano, percussion, and voice (lyric soprano, mezzosoprano, and countertenor). Musica Nova asks that composers do not submit string quartets; they prefer works for mixed ensemble. Pieces requiring a conductor may be submitted, but rehearsal time will be a factor in the selection process.
Electroacoustic works are welcome in the following formats: Electronic music will be accepted for diffusion over 1-8 channels, with available subwoofer channel (8.1 maximum). The music technology program is a major focus of the Department of Music at CMSU; we will be able to meet any reasonable technical requirements.

- Kurzweil K2600XS
- Yamaha DM1000v2 mixer, microphones, outboard equipment, etc.

Attendance: Composers whose works are selected are required to attend this conference.
Conference Registration Fees:
Composers may submit up to 3 works for consideration. Due to restraints, we are not able to consider works longer than 20:00 with preference given to works 15:00 or less in duration.
