  1. The Conference will be held October 13-15, 2005 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
  2. Visiting guests include keynote speaker Libby Larsen, the Thelema Trio of Belgium and the Valdosta Faculty Chamber Players of Valdosta State University, Georgia.
  3. A special “pre-Conference” concert will be given on Wednesday October 12 by the Thelema Trio. The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature Thelema's Belgium repertoire.
  4. Only SCI members in good standing will have their pieces performed.
  5. Conference Registration fee (required): $65 in advance (until October 1) $75 afterward. See Registration Form below.
  6. Concerts will take place throughout the day at the UNCG School of Music Recital Hall and Organ Hall. Evening concerts will be presented by the UNCG Wind Ensemble, Chorus, Chamber Singers and Orchestra.

Conference Hotels

Two hotels have been engaged for the conference and we have secured special rates for both of these. Individuals are of course free to make other lodging arrangements. Please note that the weekend of our Conference corresponds with North Carolina A&T’s annual Homecoming event. Composers are strongly urged to book hotels soon (!!) to be assured of having a room.
The Marriott is quite close--about a 20 minute walk to campus or 2 minute drive. The Ramada Inn is near the airport, about a 15-20 minute drive to campus. Shuttle service to and from the Marriott may be arranged (tbd). See information about individual hotels below.

Recordings

We are finalizing arrangements to provide recordings of performances to composers. These will be provided for a nominal fee.

Recordings will be provided ONLY to the composer of the work, i.e., recordings will not be made available generally to everyone and each recording will contain only one work. Composers who do not wish to have their music recorded will be given that option. Performers who request that their performance is not distributed will have their wishes respected.

The 2005 National Conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. will be held October 13-15, 2005 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Scores will be accepted from members of the Society of Composers, Inc. Each composer may submit one or two pieces. There is no established limit on duration but feasibility of performance will be a consideration.

Submission Deadline for Compositions: December 1, 2004 (postmark deadline).
Submission Deadline for Papers and Presentations: April 1, 2005 (postmark).

Notification of accepted Composers: February 15, 2005
Notification of accepted Papers/Presenters: June 15, 2005

Selections Process: The adjudication process for compositions will be in consultation with the Conference Chair, the performance faculty and the ensemble conductors of UNCG. Adjudication criteria will include performance feasibility, length, instrumentation requirements, and program design.

A jury drawn from the SCI membership will make selection of paper and panel presentations.

SCI composers may submit scores for the following ensembles and instruments:

We are pleased to announce that the Valdosta Faculty Contemporary Music Ensemble (Joe Brashier, conductor) from Valdosta State University has agreed to present one concert of SCI composers works on the Conference. Submissions for this ensemble will also be accepted. Details below.

The size of the required instrumentation should be 6-17 and should require a conductor. Based on faculty availability, the instrumentation can be any of the following:

Composers are encouraged to provide their own performers.

Electroacoustic Formats and Multimedia Works: CD, DAT, DVD, ADAT playback. Multi-channel stereo playback is available. Composers are encouraged to bring their own laptops, audio interfaces and playback devices. Please be as detailed as possible as to your technological requirements (including what you plan to supply and what you will need from UNCG) in your proposal.

Proposals for papers, panel discussions, workshops and other presentations:
Paper presentations are limited to twenty minutes. Panels, workshops and other collaborative sessions may take up to fifty minutes. Proposals may deal with any aspect of composition and new music, including but not limited to, compositional techniques, music theory, career development, technology, music in society, non-Western music and musical aesthetics.

Submission Guidelines

Compositions

  1. Submit a cover page with composer’s name, address telephone numbers, email, name(s) of works, instrumentation, detailed technical requirements and telephone numbers and email contact information.
  2. Submit one score and CD recording for each piece (up to two compositions). The score and recording jacket should indicate the composer’s name, title of the work and total duration. In the case of proposals for premiere performances, no CD need be submitted.
  3. For works for which a score is inappropriate, please submit a CD recording only and a description of the work.
  4. Composers may submit a maximum of 2 works for consideration
  5. Attendance is required for composers whose works are selected.
  6. Only works be SCI members will be considered. Non-members are welcome to join.
  7. Include SASE for return of material. Scores and recordings submitted without SASE will be donated to the UNCG Music Library.
  8. Accepted composers will be asked to submit program notes and bios via email.

Papers

  1. Preferred submission format is via email with hardcopy follow-up sent via postal service.
  2. Submit a one-page abstract of approximately 250 words. Title, methodology, goals and conclusions should be clearly stated. Please include a short description of your expertise or experience with the topic.
  3. Include a cover sheet with name, address, telephone numbers, email address and a list of submissions.
  4. Please specify any technical requirements. UNCG is equipped with a number of “smart” classrooms with computer/DVD/VHS projection capability, audio playback, etc.

Panels and other presentations

  1. Preferred submission format is via email with hardcopy follow-up sent via postal service.
